Waller-bridge: ‘i’m just like Fleabag char­ac­ter’

Phoebe Waller-bridge feels a deep af­fec­tion for her Fleabag char­ac­ter — be­cause she is mod­elled on her­self.

The 34-year-old ac­tress plays the tit­u­lar char­ac­ter in the hit bbc se­ries, about an an­gry, con­fused, sex­u­ally vo­ra­cious woman liv­ing in Lon­don, and scored two sur­prise emmy wins last month for Out­stand­ing

and while host­ing Satur­day Night Live, Waller-bridge joked fans who think she must be just like Fleabag are spot on with their com­par­isons. “Peo­ple of­ten as­sume I am like the char­ac­ter Fleabag sim­ply be­cause I wrote it — sex­u­ally de­praved, foul-mouthed, dan­gerou s… and I al­ways have to say to them, ‘yes, you’re ab­so­lutely right!’ ” she laughed.

“In fact, every­thing I write has a de­gree of truth and every project is dif­fer­ent. I’m not a sex ad­dict be­cause I wrote Fleabag, but I did write Killing Eve be­cause I’m a psy­chopath!”

The ac­tress has also in­sisted the emmy vic­to­ries haven’t changed her mind about wrap­ping up Fleabag af­ter only two sea­sons. “It feels right to go out on a high, and you can’t get higher than this,” she told En­ter­tain­ment Tonight.
