TOKYO — Marc Gasol appeared all set to return to action for the first time since winning the World cup with spain last month, until he wasn’t.

a day ahead of Tuesday’s exhibition opener against Houston, raptors head coach Nick Nurse had pronounced Gasol active and in the lineup, while Kyle Lowry would be out.

Hours later, the team changed course, saying Gasol would be rested. Throughout the preseason, Toronto will be cautious with its veterans, who had an extremely long year (with Gasol having the longest one of all, given his two championship runs).

Houston is also taking it slowly, with superstar guards russell Westbrook and James Harden both slated to miss one of the games in Japan. The rockets came to Tokyo straight off of playing in Hawaii.
