an im­pres­sive show­ing by the cana­dian con­tin­gent at the shang­hai Masters took an­other step in the right di­rec­tion on tues­day as Felix Auger-alias­sime and Vasek Pospisil claimed vic­to­ries.

Mon­treal’s auger­alias­sime was lead­ing Alexan­der Bub­lik of Kaza­khstan 7-6(5), 4-0 when the lat­ter player re­tired from the match.

Van­cou­ver’s Pospisil won his sec­ond match in as many days, claim­ing a 6-3, 7-5 win over Por­tu­gal’s Joao Sousa in the sec­ond round.

Pospisil will climb 59 spots in the rank­ings af­ter open­ing the week at world no. 248.

the 29-year-old canuck will face no. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev of rus­sia in the third round.

auger-alias­sime, 19, is ranked a ca­reer-high 19th this week. He’ll face no. 6 seed Ste­fanos Tsit­si­pas of Greece in the sec­ond round.

De­nis Shapo­valov of rich­mond Hill, Ont., will face top-ranked No­vak Djokovic of ser­bia in the sec­ond round on Wed­nes­day.

MUR­RAY: ‘Shut up’

For­mer world no. 1 Andy Mur­ray told Fabio Fognini to “shut up” be­fore los­ing to the fiery Ital­ian 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(2) in an ill-tem­pered sec­ond-round clash at the shang­hai Masters.

Mur­ray, 32, lost a tetchy bat­tle with the world no. 12 in which the briton twice failed to serve out the match.

He con­fronted Fognini at the net, ac­cus­ing the Ital­ian of mak­ing a noise to put him off when he was play­ing a shot.
