Fashion is many things—an art, an instrument of self-expression, a multi-billion-dollar industry—but it can be underrated as a source of pure delight. There’s the thrill of the shop, the soft pleasure of silk against the skin, or waking up and remembering anew those shoes and the excitement of introducing them to your wardrobe. Clothes have made me happy since I was a first grader proudly showing off my homemade polka-dot dress. This year I’m buying clothes for my first baby—adorable tiny creations that reveal yet more facets of fashion: keepers of memory and harbingers of hope. LAURA deCARUFEL
