EDITOR’S POV

Author, poet and wise woman Maya Angelou gave the world a wealth of brave, inspiring words. Now, nearly a year after her passing, I often find myself thinking about one of the least poetic, but perhaps most fiery and inspiring, of her utterances: “I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass.” This month, spurred on by the drive of women like filmmaker Emily Kai Bock (page 78) who are carving out their own niche, I propose we do just that. I’ll even take the first kick.
