Last spring, Max Mara teamed up with Renzo Pi­ano, the mas­ter­mind be­hind the new Whit­ney Mu­seum of Amer­i­can Art build­ing, to de­sign the Whit­ney Bag. Now, the la­bel is cel­e­brat­ing the bag’s an­niver­sary by giv­ing it an artis­tic touch-up that Gertrude Van­der­bilt Whit­ney would ap­prove of. (In 1914, Mrs. Whit­ney founded the Whit­ney Stu­dio in Green­wich Vil­lage to cel­e­brate New York’s thriv­ing com­mu­nity of artists, paving the way for the open­ing of the orig­i­nal Whit­ney Mu­seum in 1931.) The flo­ral flour­ish that has been added to the limited-run se­ries of bags is a trib­ute to Mrs. Whit­ney’s iconic wardrobe—the woman was as fear­less in her fash­ion choices as she was in her pur­suit of the arts.
