I vividly remember when the song came on. It was past midnight. The car windows were down, and the summer air was still warm. The road’s dotted line was the only break in the Saskatchew­an canola fields. And then Jann Arden sang: “Or drive your car all night, by just starlight, to Canada. That’s where I’ll be waiting.” My sister, my mother and I just looked at one another—we knew it was a moment. We started to sing along, and it felt like we were in the only car in the world.
