The fanny pack has un­der­gone the kind of awk­ward-to-glam trans­for­ma­tion usu­ally re­served for a piv­otal scene in a ’90s high-school rom­com. The belt bag, as it’s now known, made ap­pear­ances on the spring run­ways of Stella McCartney, Kenzo and Rag & Bone. Ash­ley Ci­mone and Moya An­nece, founders of Brook­lyn brand Ashya, think that the po­lar­iz­ing ac­ces­sory is no pass­ing trend. The brand, which spe­cial­izes ex­clu­sively in belt bags, doesn’t abide by sea­sons; the de­but col­lec­tion, which launched this year, is avail­able year-round. Ashya’s gen­derneu­tral bags fea­ture mul­ti­ple com­part­ments and slots to hold the essentials—and only the essentials—to en­cour­age min­i­mal­ism. “We’re chal­leng­ing cus­tomers to ap­pre­ci­ate their beauty as well as their util­i­tar­ian value,” says An­nece.
