Can you sculpt your body in one minute? Apparently so, says Dr. Martin Gibala, professor and chair of the kinesiology department at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont., and author of The One-Minute Workout, which he co-wrote with Christopher Shulgan. In a lab setting, Gibala found that 60 seconds of intense exercise improves cardiorespiratory fitness and blood-sugar control. “We’ve demonstrated that three 20-second bursts of hard exercise within a 10-minute time commitment provided health benefits similar to a 50-minute bout of continuous moderate-intensity exercise.” Gibala calls this the most “potent form of exercise available” and says it can be applied to any kind of cardio exercise, like climbing, swimming and running. As for the results? You’ll notice a difference in a couple of weeks. n
