The next best thing to work­ing out with su­per­star trainer Jil­lian Michaels is us­ing her epony­mous app—a mam­moth re­source of over 550 ex­er­cises, 15 pre-de­signed pro­grams and hun­dreds of recipes (ve­gan, pa­leo, om­ni­vore and gluten-free di­ets are all rep­re­sented) that launched ear­lier this year. It was de­signed to be com­pat­i­ble with the Ap­ple Watch, which al­lows users to view tu­to­ri­als hands-free—and pause them if they need a break. (Sorry, Jil­lian.) The watch also tracks users’ heart rates in real time, which Michaels calls “an ex­cel­lent tool” for de­ter­min­ing the in­ten­sity of a work­out. For work­outs 30 min­utes and un­der, aim for 80 to 85 per­cent of your max­i­mum heart rate. (To cal­cu­late, sub­tract your age from 220 and then mul­ti­ply by .85.)
