The key to referencing makeup from decades past without looking like you’re still in those decades is to borrow strategically. Take elements of the look but not the whole thing, says makeup artist Diane Kendal. “At Marc Jacobs, if we had done the whole ’80s look with the blush and the lip, it would have been too much, too literal,” she explains. Kendal used Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner ($31) to line the upper and lower waterlines, amplifying the shadow, and then balanced the dramatic look with “fresh and natural” skin.
