FINALE

OF ALL THE WAYS to describe Marc Jacobs’ spring/summer 2019 show, “a celebration of pure fashion” might be the most fitting. The designer delivered 54 unforgettable looks, each frothier than the last. Fabric flowers as large as the models’ heads adorned necklines, shoulders and waists. Tier upon tier of ruffles made the dresses appear as effervescent as a soap bubble. Even the suits were fuelled by a sense of levity, thanks to their chicly oversized proportions. Jacobs’ position in the fashion establishment is well earned, not least for his ability to twist clothing into more exuberant, exaggerated versions of the kinds of pieces we wear every day. In a season that’s all about escaping reality in favour of dreamy alternatives, his clothes fit the bill.
