WHAT INSPIRED YOUR NEW ALBUM? I went through some intense moments during my last tour, so when it ended, I was depressed and I started drinking. I even stopped writing music. Eventually, I realized that my writer’s block wasn’t normal. I stopped drinking and then everything came flooding back to me, and I decided that I had to put what I had been repressing into words. YOUR LAST ALBUM, ROSES, WAS BILINGUAL. WHY HAVE YOU GONE BACK TO WRITING ONLY IN FRENCH? My English sound is different, it’s more pop. And the themes that inspired my new album were more easily explored in French – they are very personal, and tinged with a kind of nostalgia that’s better expressed in my mother tongue. HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP YOUR DECADE-LONG CAREER? I’ve spent a lot of time on airplanes between Europe, Canada and the States. But most of all, it’s been remarkable to see the people who have been listening to me since I started on Myspace at 17 grow up. I’m touched by their loyalty. HOW DO YOU PASS THE TIME ON TOUR? I play Pokémon on Nintendo DS. It helps me stay calm and sober when flying. And since I love tattoos, and even do a little tattooing myself, I’ll sometimes draw designs. WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO PERFORM? Montreal is always amazing, but every time I play in Toronto the audiences are so happy to see me. They have a different way of listening to French music – for many, it’s a language they were only taught at school. That’s a whole different vibe for me. ♦ DANS QUEL ESPRIT AVEZVOUS COMPOSÉ VOTRE NOUVEL ALBUM ? J’ai vécu des moments intenses lors de ma dernière tournée : quand elle s’est terminée, j’étais déprimée, j’ai commencé à boire et j’ai arrêté de composer. J’ai fini par réaliser que ce n’était pas normal de ne plus pouvoir écrire. J’ai cessé de boire et tout m’est revenu : je me suis dit que je devais absolument mettre en mots ce que j’avais réprimé. VOTRE DERNIER ALBUM, ROSES, ÉTAIT BILINGUE. POURQUOI ÊTRE REVENUE À DES COMPOSITIONS FRANCOPHONES ? Mon son est différent en anglais, il est plus pop.

Les sujets qui ont inspiré mon nouvel album s’abordaient mieux en français, parce qu’ils sont très personnels et empreints d’une certaine nostalgie qui s’exprime vraiment mieux dans ma langue maternelle. QUEL BILAN TIREZ-VOUS DE VOS 10 ANS DE CARRIÈRE ? Ç’a été beaucoup d’avion, entre l’Europe, le Canada et les États-Unis. Mais surtout, j’ai été marquée de voir grandir les gens qui m’écoutent depuis mes débuts sur Myspace, à 17 ans. Leur fidélité me touche. COMMENT PASSEZ-VOUS LE TEMPS EN TOURNÉE ? Je joue à Pokémon sur ma Nintendo DS. Ça me permet de rester sobre et calme en avion. J’aime beaucoup le tatouage et j’en fais un peu, donc il m’arrive aussi d’en dessiner. Y A-T-IL UN ENDROIT OÙ VOUS AIMEZ PARTICULIÈREMENT VOUS PRODUIRE ? À Montréal, c’est toujours fou, mais chaque fois que je vais à Toronto, les gens sont hyper contents de me voir. Ils ont une autre façon d’écouter la musique francophone puisque, pour plusieurs, c’est une langue apprise à l’école. Pour moi, c’est une autre vibe. ♦
