FINN WOLFHARD
The Stranger Things actor on his band’s new album, Super Smash Bros. and Montreal smoked meat.
HOW DID YOUR BAND CALPURNIA COME ABOUT?
I met our drummer while filming a music video for the band PUP, and then we met our lead guitarist at a music camp in 2014. The three of us jammed on and off, and our bassist joined last year for our first show, a big benefit concert in Los Angeles. It was all instant chemistry – it just took four years to unfold! In June, we released our first record, Scout.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT OSHEAGA?
I’m excited to see bands I love, like Arctic Monkeys, The National and Alvvays, who are on our label. They’re all huge inspirations for us. I’ve never been to Montreal, so I’m looking forward to checking out all the music shops – and I’m dying to try a smoked-meat sandwich.
HOW IS TRAVELLING WITH THE STRANGER THINGS CAST DIFFERENT THAN WITH YOUR BANDMATES?
When I’m with the Stranger Things kids, more fans recognize me. It’s a lot more low-key with Calpurnia. We film Stranger Things in Atlanta, and it feels like a second home now. When we’re done filming we either have school, read lines together or play games online.
FAVOURITE FAMILY VACATION SPOT?
Seattle is one of my favourite cities. I love eating at Red Mill Burgers and shopping at Kreation Records — I’ve been collecting vinyl since I was nine — and hunting down rare Nintendo games at this retro spot, Pink Gorilla.
WHAT’S ONE THING YOU ALWAYS BRING ON TOUR?
My bandmates and I all love video games. They’re very cathartic. We like Super Smash Bros. and Fortnite. Any chance we get, we game.
