Hooray for huaraches from Puerto Vallarta.

Associate editor Caitlin Stall-Paquet brings back huaraches in shades as vibrant as a Puerto Vallarta sunset.

“I loved seeing bright hues splashed all over this Pacific Coast city, from embroidered textiles at market stalls to the red, orange and green salsas crowding taco stands. Walking along a busy street in the old town, I was immediately drawn to Zapatería Mercy, a shop packed with a huge variety of colourful leather shoes handmade in the owners’ hometown of Sahuayo, a small city in Michoacán, the state neighbouring Jalisco. Versions of these woven sandals were found in farming communities that date back to preColumbian times, and they remain the go-to footwear for both locals and visitors looking for a comfy slip-on. Mercy also makes classic black and brown versions, but I had to go for ones that will remind me of Puerto Vallarta’s technicolour streets every time I wear them.”
