THE SOMMELIER SAYS

VÉRONIQUE RIVEST ON ORANGE WINE

-

No, orange wines are not made with oranges! They are white wines produced like reds, in which the grape skins are left on to macerate, resulting in an amber hue. It’s an old technique that makes for colourful whites with more tannins. Southbrook Vineyards on the Niagara Peninsula was Canada’s first biodynamic winery and one of the first to make Canadian orange wine – I love their 2017 Estate Orange Wine with notes of orange peel, wildflowers and tea.
