MACGRUBER!
Here’s some great news, for once: Will Forte’s beloved MacGruber is set to follow his movie with a MacGruber TV show. The series, which is being developed for NBC’s Peacock streaming service, will see the whole gang return, including Kristen Wiig and director Jorma Taccone.
WHAT’S THAT SMELL?
Gwyneth Paltrow is basically just a normie troll. Her lifestyle brand Goop has managed to rope in yuppies in search of the next great wellness tip while simultaneously weaponizing clickbait and willingly playing the heel to grow the brand. Gwyneth kicked off the year — and the launch of her Goop show on Netflix — by selling a candle called “This Smells Like My Vagina,” which sold out in mere moments. Then, on Seth Meyers, she twisted the knife for anyone annoyed about the candle’s very existence: “It actually became kind of a funny thing, where it was really funny to us, but also a little bit punk rock.”
NO FOX GIVEN
The most recent step in Disney’s grand quest for world domination was the acquisition of Fox for some $52 billion U.S. in 2017. Now that they’ve picked up the keys and figured out the lay of the land, they’ve made some big changes. Specifically, they’ve deleted the word “Fox” from their film companies. That means 20th Century Fox is now just 20th Century, and Fox Searchlight is now just Searchlight. It’s a chess move to ensure that people don’t think of Fox News while at the cinema. Well, unless they’re going to see Bombshell.
BEATING A DEAD DEER
Disney continues to treat its animated films like storyboards for soulless, CGI “live-action” adaptations, and Bambi is up next. The beloved animated feature about a deer whose mother is ruthlessly slaughtered will soon begin production. It’s being developed based on a screenplay from Geneva Robertson-Dworet ( Captain Marvel) and Lindsey Beer ( Sierra Burgess Is a Loser).
BAD TRIP
Depending on how you feel about substances, the amount of weed that Cheech and Chong smoke may already feel like a terrifying premise. But the long-running comedic duo might one day formalize that notion with a full-on horror movie. In a conversation with MovieWeb, Tommy Chong said he’d been trying to convince Cheech Marin to make a horror movie for years, even citing Get Out as an influence. But Chong suggested he may not get off the couch to make it. “I doubt it will get made. Right now my agent and I are working on a lot of things. But mainly, I’m working on staying warm, staying comfortable and high.”
