Behind the scenes
Thank God for the creative work of His Spirit
For many of us, it’s been a summer of unusual ups and downs. Both of us editors have loved ones who have gone through major health issues. We’ve also enjoyed seeing gorgeous pictures from social media friends who enjoyed what seemed like extra-long vacations this year.
Maybe it’s the pandemic that makes so many experiences seem exaggerated – extra awesome or extra scary.
Our creative arts contest this spring surpassed our expectations. You can see samples on the facing page, but follow the hyperlinks to see many more images and to read the amazing poetry and prose that were also submitted.
How encouraging to see so many Canadians using their artistic gifts! What can we do but acknowledge the generosity of our Creator who has endowed all of us with creativity? We’re thrilled at the work represented here and encouraged to continue looking for ways to support believers called to major creative commitments such as writing books or professional artistic careers.
Admittedly, it can be challenging to even think about exercising creativity when we’re feeling battered by so many evils.
Many of us know too well the damage caused by the pandemic here in Canada and still being endured in many other parts of the world. Our feature on page 33 takes a clear-eyed look at what churches experienced in Canada, the variety of their responses – and what we can learn.
How global ministries based in Canada have responded to the pandemic is the focus of a feature on page 40. Hardships and disasters hit the most vulnerable people in the world in ways we sometimes can’t imagine. Even as we write this we’re watching Afghanistan fall apart, and we have no doubt many Canadianbased ministries are trying to determine their next steps in that troubled nation. Let’s keep our eyes and hearts open to how we can help.
Other articles in this issue tackle the federal election (p. 18), faith deconstruction (p. 28), hurt caused by our brothers and sisters within the church (p. 38), racism (p. 46) and other serious topics. How do we keep moving forward amid all the challenges and negativity?
Thank God, we have the Holy Spirit empowering us to minister together, see hope where hope seems absent, and be creative when society seems to crassly prioritize other values. As you read these articles, may God show you how He is at work for good even in surprising places.
