Enough to spend way more money than I should for such a min­i­mal item I will wear only a few times a year. But high Ly­cra con­tent, gallery wor­thy prints, savvy cuts and a shop pro who can eye­ball my curves and make the most of my mid­dle-aged sit­u­a­tion all help take the sting out of this an­nual downer.

I don’t care how young or toned you are, swimwear shop­ping sucks.

So with con­fi­dence-boost­ing as a mission, our Swim Ther­apy theme was born. Con­trib­u­tor Mar­il­isa Racco found re­as­sur­ance from Canadian swimwear in­sid­ers in “Suit­ing Up” (page 38), while ex­ec­u­tive edi­tor Jac­que­lyn Fran­cis got in­spired by two women who earn their living do­ing some­thing many of us avoid: be­ing pho­tographed in monoki­nis and mail­lots (“Body Talk,” page 42). And through­out our pages you’ll find lots of mood boost­ers and beauty tips to help you look and feel great from your surfer cool strands to your pedi-per­fect toes.

If our cover girl, Ash­ley Ben­son, ever felt self­con­scious at the beach she surely cured that when she played a bikini-clad badass in the 2012 romp Spring Break­ers. Her next film, Pix­els, has her cast as a sword-fight­ing video game war­rior, but at our shoot Ben­son was any­thing but com­bat­ive. “Even though she’s been work­ing in Hol­ly­wood since she was nine, she is gen­uinely wide-eyed and ex­cited and not at all jaded,” re­ports fea­tures edi­tor Elio Ian­nacci, who in­ter­viewed Ben­son for “Be­yond Pretty” (page 122). Ben­son’s style is to­tally So Cal, too—she ar­rived on set in boots and a beanie, de­spite the L.A. heat.

While much of our team was, uh, swim­ming in thoughts of sum­mer, I was work­ing my way through a stack of sto­ries in prepa­ra­tion for an in­ter­view with Karl Lager­feld (“King Karl,” page 105). At 79 (give or take, depend­ing on the source), Lager­feld is as sharp, opin­ion­ated and en­er­getic as ever. And as lobby designer for the Art Shoppe Lofts + Con­dos in Toronto, he is not just lend­ing his name and cash­ing the cheque (ru­moured to be in the mil­lions) but dic­tat­ing ev­ery de­tail as he would a col­lec­tion for Fendi or Chanel. Ge­nius is a term used too loosely in the fash­ion world, but in sum­ming up Lager­feld, it’s prob­a­bly the most ac­cu­rate word there is.
