Sustainability is important to New York-based jewellery designer Ana-Katarina Vinkler-Petrovic. The former war correspondent embraced vegetarianism as a teenager, began eating organic in college and would take old newspapers to a food co-op to be recycled, back when separating bins were less common. “My connection to earth has always been very strong,” says Vinkler-Petrovic, who started AnaKatarina with the intention of using reclaimed, recycled, fair-trade and precious materials. The Cloud 9 collection (shown) is centred around a Sea of Cortez pearl (farmed in California) connected to a Brazilian aquamarine that’s been hand-carved to resemble a cloud. The diamonds and metals are reclaimed, and two Montana sapphires were added for colour. “From an intuitive aspect, sustainability is about love,” says Vinkler-Petrovic. “These pieces are very much about joy and love.”
