A theme turns party fun up a notch.

IT’S OFTEN been said “it’s all in the details” and that’s particularly true when it comes to “theme” parties.

Ideas for a theme party are almost endless. Sometimes the menu sets the theme; sometimes it’s the occasion or the time of year; a costume party seems to always be popular.

Guests love to get involved and contribute to the festivities so themes that involve guests “dressing the part” are always a hit. It’s amazing to see the effort and imagination attendees will put forth. Halloween is the all-time great costume theme party, of course, but costume parties can be great at any time of year or for any occasion.

Costumes can be themed to an era, such as ’80s disco, celebrities dead or alive, or the Wild West. Even a simpler dress code can make things festive. Ask guests to wear red and white for a Canada Day celebration or all white for the classic “white party,” which is always chic.

Whether it is as simple as asking guests to wear a certain colour or going all-out with the décor and menu, there’s something about a “theme” that makes the party more fun.

In late spring, to benefit the Cambridge & North Dumfries Community Foundation, I got together with neighbourhood friends and took part in hosting a “travelling soirée,” with an hour or so in each of five homes. The theme was “Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills.” The photos shown here illustrate some of the décor ideas from the event.
