FOCAL POINTS: Here are some of the highlights from the backyard of Kimberly Barber and Markus Philipp.

Patio and step

Markus Philipp laid the patio, which features manufactured stone of varying sizes and colours. The Douglas fir beams used as steps up to the deck can double as extra seating when needed.

The deck

The floor of the deck was rebuilt using interlocking cedar boards salvaged from the roof of a farmhouse.

Corner

Foliage in a corner of the yard creates a secluded area just right for a bench and small patio.

Chairs

The Muskoka chairs and table have been allowed to weather naturally to a soft grey that the couple prefer to stains.

Woodpile

A pile of logs stacked beside the deck is oddly decorative. The wood is from an old tree that Markus Philipp cut up after it fell in the front yard.
