smile spreads across his face when he looks over at the majestic grandfather clock.

“That’s Willa,” he says, softly stroking the side of the highly ornate, two-and-a-halfmetre structure. “I’ve always loved this clock. Look at it. It’s spectacular.”

The clock was donated to the Waterloo Region Museum a little more than three decades ago and Kraak, who volunteers repairing and maintaining the clocks in the museum’s collection, couldn’t resist making this unique piece his special project.

A plaque on the front of the clock indicates the oak case, intricately carved in a Greco-Roman style, was made by William Hood Scott from the city of Galt. His granddaughter, Willa Scott, donated it in his memory to the museum, hence Kraak’s nickname for the piece.

Like many of the antique clocks donated to the museum, this one wasn’t working

John Motz has been fascinated with clocks since he was a child. His passion led him to become a volunteer at the museum four years ago.

Gerry Kraak gives some special care to Willa, a two-and-a-half-metre beauty donated by Willa Scott,

granddaughter of clockmaker William Hood Scott of the city of Galt.
