John Harrop is an architect who specializes in mountaintop toilets. Harrop takes pride in his work, designing eye-catching outhouses for climbers and hikers. His Castle Mountain project has become famous among those who have used it. It is a self-sufficient, environmentally sustainable toilet that uses the sun’s heat to evaporate human waste, dehydrating human leftovers which are picked up by helicopter. “It is said that when one is sitting on the seat there, they have the most spectacular view of the mountains that one could have, and he designed it specifically so that it would not only serve the usual function, but provide an amazing view for users,” said Bruce Keith, the recently retired executive director of Alpine Club of Canada.
