The West Vancouver Sea Cliffs

- Story and photos by

If you’re like most climbers from the Vancouver area you’ve probably got one thing brewing in the brain, Squamish. That’s understandable, but perhaps you’re stuck in the city, craving a quick-fix in winter sunshine, or maybe you simply don’t have time for a proper session on the big stone. Well, you’re in luck because along West Vancouver’s esthetic, rocky coastline between the villages of Horseshoe Bay and Dundarave has a collection of sun-soaked sea cliffs.

Dreamy crags invite whimsical exploration and have a delightful range of deepwater traverses, traditional, and top-rope pitches in a spectacular, coastal setting. You might catch a glimpse of Orcas, dolphins, or cur ious harbour seals as you scramble around the craggy shoreline. Best of all, they’re climbable year-round. Appreciating a long, epic sunset from any of the cliffs – perhaps with a skin of cabernet and a wheel of cheese – is a lovely pastime cher ished by many Vancouver climbers.
