of the country’s most enjoyable rock climbing is found on the cliffs of Northweste­rn Ontario. In fact, it might just be the best basalt climbing in Canada. Far from any metropolit­an area – the closest city is Thunder Bay – the destinatio­n offers a remote feel, set on the shores of Lake Superior.

For decades, climbers have been coming and going. With a small scene of local climbers, Thunder Bay’s histor y has had bursts of developmen­t. When the r ight people have met up, often moving to the reg ion for universit y, new routes, walls and val leys have been uncovered.
