Rhino $26

Anyone who spends a lot of time belaying with a grigri or similar assisted-braking device knows how easy it is for the carabiner to rotate, creating a potentially dangerous cross-loading situation. The Rhino has a small “horn” on the carabiner’s spine, preventing the belay device from moving off the top bar. A similar stopper is provided on the gate side by the locking mechanism, effectively trapping the belay device on the top bar. Of course, thanks to the large, round top bar, the biner functions with regular tube-st yle devices just as well. The screwgate version weighs a mere 72 g, no more than many other belay carabiners, and has all the strength you’d ever need. Though seemingly a minor modif ication, the horn makes this biner a great choice for belay duty.
