WHEN TO VISIT
All seasons have been said to be good at the Obed, the best being the fall and the spring. We went during a cold snap (it snowed that week) in early spring and we were still able to climb, albeit having to chase sun more than usual. North facing crags such as Lilly and Y-12 are shady whereas the Obed and South Clear are good when the cold days hit. The humidity and rain of the summers are not conducive to sending, so be prepared for non-ideal conditions and shade chasing during the summer months. The season is a bit earlier than the Red River Gorge’s, and so consider going to the Obed if the temperatures aren’t warm enough to climb at the Red.
Even the worst weeks of precipitation can be alright for climbing as long as you can pull overhanging roofs. Rain or shine, hot or cold, you can easily find something to climb at the Obed.
