HAYES CLIMBS ANOTHER 5.15

In the spring of 2017, Margo Hayes, 19, became the first woman to climb a confirmed 5.15a with her send of La Rambla in Spain. Hayes spent seven days projecting it during her spring break. She got so close at the end of February, that she changed her f light and climbed it.

Prior to that historic climb, Hayes had done 14 routes i n the 5.14 range. She jumped on the scene a few seasons before when she made the first ascent of Bad Girls Club 5.14d at Rif le in Colorado.

Hayes started climbing at 10 years old, in Boulder, on Team abc. She went on to be a top national competitor before heading to the internatio­nal comp scene. At 17 she was national champion. Less than six months after Hayes climbed La Rambla, she visited Ceuse, France.

Her goal was to become the first woman to climb Realizatio­n/Biographie 5.15a, one of the most famous of the grade. It didn’t take her long before she did what she set out to do and sent the steep pocket
