The ICE Climber

Gripped - - THE RACK -

We are heading into the coldest and darkest days of the year in Canada, but that’s no reason to stay inside. If you’re new to ice climbing or you’ve been swinging tools for decades, here’s some of our favourite ice climbing equipment for this season.

DMM Apex

DMM has been making some of the industry’s leading ice tools for over two decades and it’s easy to say the Apex is their best workhorse of a tool yet. They’re robust, versatile and will instil confidence no matter what you’re climbing. Few tools allow you to move between hand rests without the pick rotating like these. The radius of the tools lets you clear bulgy cauliflower and awkward mushrooms. The attention to detail is obvious when you find the tool’s balance point. The picks are very durable and the handles fit big mitts. Great for long moderates.

Black Diamond

The Fuels have been many climbers go-to tool for the past few seasons and for good reasons. They are a solid all-round choice for steep ice and technical mixed. They swing like a dream and have comfortable grips with super sticky rubber. The shaft is hydroformed from a single piece of aluminum for rigidity. They’re sleek and streamlined with a simple head design that is easy to use when swapping picks. They have a removable and clippable spike and the pommel has spacing washers for different hand sizes. If you go with an integrated hammer, then you can pound pins on mixed and alpine routes. Ideal for steep ice and mixed.

Petzl Nomic Fuel

The new-for-2018 Petzl Nomic is an evolution of the very popular secondgeneration Nomic. It has a new plastic head insert which addresses the issues climbers were having with a loose head and the new grips are softer, grippier and wider. The new handle is also 20 grams lighter. It has an updated Mini Marteau hammer which brings the weight back up to 605 grams. The new pommel has a spike and lanyard attachment, which is not meant for bodyweight. The pick weights are redesigned with a taper to jam in cracks. Amazing updates which make a surprisingly big difference in the performance. Highly recommended.
