2. Graphic Modern

-

THE BACKSTORY: A graphic palette can seem intimidating, especially if it’s in a small space — but it’s a risk worth taking, says designer Nam Dang-Mitchell. She gave this 103-square-foot loft kitchen its modern flavour with just two ingredients: hits of black and a toasty envelope of oak. A striking vent hood and narrow Pietra Grey marble shelf (which continues as the backsplash and counter material) are framed by handsome floor-to-ceiling cabinets. An expansive blond oak dining table reads more like a lounge, thanks to black chairs and sculptural pendants.

“I knew the graphic nature of the marble and the blackenedsteel vent hood would contrast nicely with the wood,” says Nam. “Every element should highlight and enhance the material next to it.” She was careful to add that eye-catching impact while avoiding the “dated bachelor pad” look, which Nam says can happen if black finishes are too glossy. Instead, she used smooth, matte finishes and grounded everything with classic, chevron-pattern flooring. The final result is simply fabulous.
