THE LOOK Old World
“I love it when a room doesn’t look like it’s supposed to look,” says Suzie Richard. This may sound surprising coming from a designer but, for Suzie, using unique pieces in unexpected places is what gives a space soul. It’s also a hallmark of the design firm she runs with Suzie Bergeron, who was the “client” for this Montreal bathroom, along with her husband, Martin. Stripping the 1850s-era space back to its original bones — which included a vaulted ceiling, timber beams and original wooden floors — was a must. “I knew that we wouldn’t have to add much to make it really sophisticated,” says Suzie R. The designers repurposed an antique secretary as a storage cupboard and had an old table sliced in half to create two console vanities. Modern amenities, including a freestanding tub, quartz counters and brass wall-mounted faucets, have their place in the 94-square-foot space, too. Why choose between past and present when you can have the best of both?
THE LOOK Artful Elegance
As the founder of one of Canada’s most beloved and body-positive intimates brands, Joanna Griffiths knows what women want. In her own Toronto bathroom, which she shares with her husband, the Knix CEO craved a private oasis with personality. “Joanna found me on Instagram while she was on a flight,” says designer Shirley Meisels, who oversaw the renovation. “We hit it off right away and were totally in sync with the design.” Putting function first and frills second, Shirley cleverly fit a freestanding tub, double vanity, makeup table, linen chest and separate water closet in
125 square feet. The finished space, which has marble-look porcelain tile, delicate fluted details and warm brass hardware, looks good and will wear well — just like a pair of Knix knickers.
