Inuit Art Quarterly

Chairman’s Message

- Sammy Kudluk

As we continue working towards our goal to represent and cover the variety of work being made by Inuit artists and performers across Inuit Nunangat, our theme for this issue is photography. This issue highlights six notable emerging Inuit photographers alongside important artists from the past, such as Itee Pootoogook, who was actively involved in the Kinngait Studios and passed away in 2014, and the late James Andersen, a community photographer from Makkovik in Nunatsiavut (Northern Labrador).

Also featured is early-career artist Couzyn van Heuvelen, who experiments with new materials (including plastics, metals and foils alongside bone, baleen and wood) and a range of fabrication processes to produce innovative and exciting work that challenges our expectations of what Inuit art might look like.

As an art form, photography has become not only an important way for artists to share their way of life, but also a tool to present, protest and reach out and make the public aware of important contemporary issues that communities across the North are facing. I hope you feel the potential of this medium through our pages and that you enjoy this issue. Finally, I would also like to wish all of our readers a safe and happy holiday season.
