Mathew Nuqin­gaq and Tanya Ta­gaq Awarded Or­der of Canada

On De­cem­ber 30th, 2016, it was an­nounced that jew­eller Mathew Nuqin­gaq and per­former Tanya Ta­gaq would be ap­pointed Mem­bers of the Or­der of Canada at a cer­e­mony in the spring of 2017. Nuqin­gaq is the owner of Aayu­raa Stu­dio and a leader in his com­mu­nity as an arts ed­u­ca­tor, a co-founder of the Nu­navut Arts and Crafts As­so­ci­a­tion and the cur­rent Sec­re­tary-Trea­surer of the Inuit

Art Foun­da­tion Board of Direc­tors. Ta­gaq is a Po­laris prize-win­ning mu­si­cian, known for her unique style of con­tem­po­rary throat singing, and is an out­spo­ken ad­vo­cate for Inuit so­cial and cul­tural is­sues. This year marks the 50th an­niver­sary of the Or­der, estab­lished in 1967. To mark this sig­nif­i­cant mile­stone, the Or­der an­nounced it would hon­our 100 new ap­pointees.
