Inuit Art Quarterly

Message from the Board

-

This summer issue focuses on skin, a material that has allowed Inuit to thrive for centuries and one that continues to allow artists to make incredible artworks and clothing. Sealskin in particular is a powerful and important material used by artists, including myself, not only because it is plentiful in the Arctic, but also because it represents a strong connection to Inuit culture and history.

I am very proud to share that for the first time the Kenojuak Ashevak Memorial Award will be given to an established artist to pursue a residency. Created in 2014 to honour the legacy and career of this important artist, this award will allow recipients to reach new creative heights. This award, and your support of it, means that artists have the opportunity to continue to experiment and grow.

Finally, on behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to say a big thank you to our outgoing Board Member Jimmy Manning for his years of hard work and dedication. I would also like to congratulate our IAQ team on their four National Magazine Award nominations. This is a major achievement, one of which we are all very proud. To know that our artists and their beautiful artworks reach so many people, and have such a large impact on them, is an incredible feeling. I’d like to thank you, our readers, for supporting us all these years. I hope you enjoy this issue!
