Pownal team sits in first place

Red Devils beat Kivalliq Canucks from Nunavut to improve to 2-0

TIGNISH — The Pownal Redmond Enterprise­s Red Devils built a 3-0 lead on the Kivalliq Canucks from Nunavut Thursday afternoon and held on for a 5-3 victory.

The Red Devils lead the Perry’s Constructi­on Maritime Hockey North Junior C Tournament, being played at the Tignish Credit Union Arena, with two wins heading into today’s final round-robin games in the five- team tournament.

Kurtis Macewen and Pat Callaghan each scored twice for Pownal and Cody Mcguirk made it 5-2 with five minutes left in the third.

Kris Mcguirk (2) Daniel Donahoe, Robert Christense­n, Aaron Fitzpatric­k and Jeremy Godkin added assists.

Wendel Kaludjak scored all three of the Canucks’ third period goals and was named his team’s player of the game. Callaghan earned that honour for the Red Devils.

Assisting on Kaludjak’s goals were Silu Oolooyuk (2), Roy Kopak and Brandyn Airut.

The Red Devils Ben Jones faced 20 Team North shots while James Merritt was tested 25 times by Pownal.

Eight minors were called with Pownal picking up five of them.

New Brunswick: Zack Hutchinson (2) and Brendan Roy. Assists: Brett Guidry, Ben Shephard and Nick O’neill. Goaltender Jordan Weir faced 30 shots.

For Nova Scotia: Josh Shatford, Calvin Renton and Corey Young. Assists: Nick Ferguson, Ryan Horsman, Chris Mills, Justin Norris and Mattieu Bourgeois. Goaltender Ben Bailey faced 18 New Brunswick shots.

The game’s 10 minors were evenly split. Nova Scotia also picked up a 10minute misconduct. Chester Clippers 10, Kivalliq Canucks 1 Nova Scotia scored four times in each of the first two periods and cruised to a 10-1 win. Hockey North’s Solomon Tulurialik from TJ Tootoo and Joshua Ningeongan accounted for Hockey North’s lone goal midway through the second. Justin Norris led Nova Scotia with a natural hat trick and five assists and Corey Young had three goals and three assists.

Also scoring were Kyle Dilosa ( 2, 1), Matthew Lohnes and Jeremy Church. Single assists went to Josh Shatford, Nick Ferguson, Alex Armstrong, Brock Hamilton, Chris Mills and Ryan Horsman.

Goaltender­s were Charles Oosuaq for the Canucks and Olafr Schmidt for Nova Scotia. The Clippers outshot the Canucks 21-17.

Nova Scotia took five minors and two 10-minute misconduct­s. Hockey North sat out one minor.
