Sharks net women’s hockey title

Crapaud-based team beats UPEI squad in final and ends Blades’ long run as champions

The Ford’s Sharks of Crapaud downed the UPEI Junior Varsity squad 4-1 to capture the Island Women’s Hockey League championsh­ip at Maclauchla­n Arena recently.

With the series tied at two games each, the Sharks sealed the victory in the fifth and final game with two empty-net goals with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game.

Scoring for the Sharks were Ellen Andrews, Jocelyn Robbins (1-1), Mary Mckinnon and Lindsay Macleod. Cassie Mackenzie had an assist.

Tessa Roche, assisted by Courtney Stewart, scored for UPEI.

Following the game, Sharks’ team captain Tracy Knowles accepted the championsh­ip trophy from league president Susan Dalziel. Dalziel thanked both teams for the fast and exciting series.

The Sharks advanced to the final by downing the defending champion Pownal Blades three games to two in one semifinal series.

The final game of the series was decided in overtime. The Blades were seeking their fourth straight league title.

The other semifinal saw UPEI defeat the Rustico Ice Cats in three straight games.

The Western Wild of Tyne Valley and the Southside Lynx of Borden-carleton failed to make the playoffs.

All teams are reminded they must have a representa­tive in attendance at the league’s annual general meeting scheduled for early May.
