Summerside police receive complaints of new phone fraud

-

SUMMERSIDE – Police here have received several reports of a phone scam in the community over the last two days. Seven complaints involved residents receiving a call from a man identifying himself as a representative from Service Canada. The victim is advised they owe money in tax arrears, and if they don’t contact this person immediately and arrange payment, an official will show up at their residence to arrest them. Police investigators are working with the Canadian Fraud Centre investigating the matter. Police report this is not the way Service Canada conducts business. Citizens should not provide personal information over the telephone or send monies to anyone they have not confirmed is a legitimate organization.
