Summerside eyeing new glass and boards for CUP arena

- BY COLIN MACLEAN Colin.MacLean@Tc.tc

The City of Summerside has tentatively approved the purchase of new glass and puck board for the Eastlink Arena in Credit Union Place.

The project has a price tag of $248,200, however, city staff have told council that the replacement is necessary to ensure the safety of those who use the facility.

The old plate glass system has been worn out by frequent removal and re-installation over the past 10 years, states a recommendation given to the committee of council meeting on Tuesday.

It now requires daily maintenance to ensure it is safe to use.

The city issued a request for proposals on this project but only received one submission, from Athletica Sports Systems and its CrestalPlex Series A system.

The new system is designed to be installed and removed frequently with as little manpower as possible.

This project was planned for in the city’s 2017 budget, however, only $225,000 was set aside.

However, JP Desrosiers, director of community services, said that he’s confident his department will be able to make up the difference within budget as there are a couple of other projects expected to come in under budget. Council will vote on whether to give full approval to the purchase at its full council meeting later this month.
