Burdine, Roberts earn Hurricanes’ top athletic honours

Hughes, Lapointe named rookies of the year

Trenity Burdine and Briar Roberts earned the big prizes at the recent Holland College Hurricanes awards gala in Charlottet­own.

Burdine, a fifth year forward from Reading, Pa., led the men’s basketball team to its fifth straight Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n basketball championsh­ip as well as a bronze medal at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n nationals last month in Charlottet­own.

Burdine finished second in scoring in the ACAA this year (19.2 points per game) and was named the ‘Canes men’s basketball most valuable player.

Roberts, a third-year midfielder from Kinkora, led the ‘Canes to their fourth ACAA soccer championsh­ip and first since 2013.

The ‘Canes would advance to nationals and finish in eighth place. Roberts was second conference in scoring this year (31 points), and was named the team’s most valuable player.

Rookies

Emma Hughes and Marcus Lapointe took home rookie-ofthe-year honours after excellent seasons in their first year of post-secondary play. Hughes, from Summerside, finished conference play with a 43-5 record and earned ACAA player and rookie of the year. Hughes and Kristyn Visser represente­d the ‘Canes at the nationals, where they would take home a fifth-place finish in women’s doubles competitio­n. Hughes was also named the women’s badminton most valuable player.

Lapointe, a first year libero from Wolfville, N.S., was a key contributo­r as Holland College won its first-ever ACAA men’s volleyball championsh­ip. The ‘Canes finished eighth at nationals, and Lapointe was named the ACAA libero of the year.

Men’s basketball head coach Josh Whitty was named coach of the year.

Other major award winners were the Culinary Institute of Canada (Hurricanes Award); Dominique Ryan (President’s Award); Kristyn Visser (Citizenshi­p Award), and Zach Davidson (Leadership in Sport Award).
