P.E.I. man faces firearms, assault charges after melee with father

A 21-year-old man faces assault and firearms charges after an incident with his father Wednesday night in Kings County.

Shortly after 11 p.m., the RCMP were called to a residence in a rural area of Kings County where an assault had allegedly taken place between a father and a son.

Before officers could arrive, police received a second call from the residence alleging that a firearm had been shot into the air.

Officers from the Kings and Queens districts attended the residence and arrested the 21-year-old outside the residence without incident and with the assistance of a police service dog. The RCMP says thee long guns were seized from the residence.

The alleged assault victim was treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for nonlife threatenin­g injuries.

The 21-year-old was charged with assault causing bodily harm, careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and a breach of probation.

He appeared in court in Georgetown on Thursday and was released on conditions of an undertakin­g. The accused will appear in court to answer to the charges at a later date.

The RCMP would not release the name of the accused until he appaears in court again.

The investigat­ion is ongoing.
