North American IT conference is coming to Charlottetown for second year in a row

-

For Lincoln Maskey, hosting information technology (IT) professionals from across North America is a great opportunity to grow P.E.I.’s own industry.

Maskey is a senior software engineer with Island company, iWave Information systems. From Aug. 9 to 11, Charlottetown will be the site of Northeast PHP 2017. This is the second year the major IT conference has been held on the Island.

In support of the event, the provincial government has provided an $8,000 grant. “Northeast PHP 2017 gives increased profile to the industry here, and that may attract new start-ups or business expansions to our province,” said Maskey. “But beyond that, this is a tremendous learning and networking opportunity for industry professionals on the Island and one that will pay dividends for the IT sector.”

Information technology is a strong and growing community on the Island, providing more than $200 million annually to the province’s economy and employing more than

1,800.

The conference will bring together dozens of IT experts and web developers from the continent to discuss advancements in the industry and best practices to network and collaborate with fellow industry professionals.

“The province’s role is to ensure the industry on P.E.I. is prepared to meet the challenges of a changing economy and the fast paced evolution of the IT industry as a whole,” said Heath MacDonald, Economic Development and Tourism Minister.

He added, it’s important to showcase what there is to offer, to highlight successes in the industry and promote the province’s workforce. Peter MacIntyre, the conference organizer says this year’s goal is to build on the past success.

“We had an amazing response from the many presenters and delegates who came to Charlottetown last year for the 2016 edition of the conference.”
