A perfect season
Murphy scores championship-clinching goal as KISHORA goes undefeated
KISHORA capped a perfect season.
Ellen Murphy scored approximately halfway through the first half, and Maleah Welton recorded the shutout as KISHORA edged Souris 1-0 in the P.E.I. School Athletic Association Intermediate A Girls Soccer League gold-medal game at Stonepark Intermediate School on Thursday afternoon.
“The girls played really well, and the wind was obviously a factor both ways,” assessed KISHORA coach Blair Murphy. “We had the wind in the first half when we scored a goal, and they had most of the play in the second half, but we played very well defensively. I don’t know if we gave up a shot in the second half.”
KISHORA is comprised of players from Kensington Intermediate-Senior High School, Amherst Cove and Somerset.
Winning goal
Murphy took a corner kick that sailed directly into the net for what proved to be the championship-clinching goal. It came just after KISHORA had “ripped one off the cross bar.”
As they have all year, the KISHORA turned in another strong defensive effort.
“We have only given up one goal all season,” said Murphy, who praised the play of fullbacks Lydia Hamill, BrookeLynn Gallant, Hannah Rogers and Bailey Butler, who quietly went about their business with little fanfare all season. “All year those four girls shut everything down defensively for us.”

Overall, KISHORA completed the 2017 season undefeated at 8-0 (won-lost). Murphy, who liked the team’s consistency all year, described the run to the championship as a team effort.
“They all did the roles I asked them to do,” he added.
