Borden-Carleton planning new civic building
The Town of Borden-Carleton plans to construct a new civic building in the near future. Plans are underway to erect the building on a lot adjacent to the town’s fire hall.
The design and composition of the building are still in the development stages, said Mayor Dean Sexton, but the town has been planning for a project like this for a number of years.
Sexton said the intent is to have the building be useful to a number of groups in the community, especially seniors. He’s hopeful it will also include a nurse practitioner’s office and other amenities.
“We’re going to try and make it as simple a building as possible, but also very useful,” said Sexton.
The project is expected to cost about $400,000. The town already owns the lot in question, and it’s serviced with water and sewer.
Sexton added that in an effort to avoid increasing the town’s debt, council has been saving money from its share of the Gas Tax fund, to pay for its share of the project. They’ve been allocating money with this goal in mind for the past four years.
The town has applied for federal and provincial funding to help pay for the project, and while Sexton could not confirm that it had been approved earlier this week, he was optimistic an announcement would be forthcoming.
Sexton did not have a timeframe for when construction of the building might begin.
