Close playoff games highlight midget A female tournament
The Tignish Aces won the midget A female hockey tournament in Summerside on Sunday beating out seven other Maritime teams.
The championship banner for the Consolidated Credit Union midget A female hockey tournament has taken up residence in West Prince.
The Tignish Aces capped an undefeated weekend on Sunday afternoon, with a 2- 0 victory over the Pictou County Selects in the championship game of the eightteam tournament, which began on Friday afternoon and was hosted by the Summerside Area Minor Hockey Association.
Tamara Wedge, who was named the tournament’s most valuable player, and Keisha Doucette scored for the Aces while Madison McHugh recorded the shutout in the championship game. Doucette ( Aces) and Emily Hayes ( Selects) were named the players of the game.
Tignish led 1- 0 after the first and second periods of the closely- contested final.
Overall, Tignish went 4- 0- 1 ( won- lost- tied).
After recording two wins and a tie in round- robin play, the Aces needed overtime to get by the Southside Wildcats 2- 1 on a goal by Wedge halfway through the 3- on- 3 five- minute extra period.
Valerie Harper ( Aces) and Selena Lowther ( Lynx) received recognition as players of the game.
A shootout was needed to decide the other semifinal as Pictou County prevailed 4- 3 over the Northumberland Bruins as the playoff round was highlighted by close games. Charlotte Musiak scored in the eighth round to send the Selects to the final.
Players of he game were Musiak ( Selects) and Alyssa MacNeill ( Bruins).
In the quarter- finals, Southside blanked the Georgetown/ Morell Mustangs 3- 0 while Northumberland edged the Antigonish Bulldogs 1- 0. Brooke McCardle was the
player of the game for Southside while Sam MacSwain took the honour for Georgetown/ Morell.
Briana Creed ( Northumberland) and Jazz Meagher ( Antigonish) were the top performers in the other quarter- final. Tournament all- stars were
Madison McHugh ( Tignish), Thea Waller ( Pictou County), Halle Stewart ( Northumberland), Brooke McCardle ( Southside), Madison Dort ( Antigonish) and Maddison Murphy ( Georgetown/ Morell).
