Midget Maroons win, lose

Cooke leads offence in victory

The O’Leary Maroons split a pair of recent games in the P.E.I. Midget AA Hockey League. The Maroons dropped a 4-2 decision to the Kings County Wild, and recorded a 5-0 road win over the Tignish Aces.

At the Eastern Kings Sportsplex in Souris, Thomas Sudsbury scored a hat trick and Matt MacDonald added a goal and an assist to account for the Wild’s scoring. Darcy Chaisson, Jason Gormley and Ryan MacDonald added helpers.

Tanner Gallant netted both goals for O’Leary. Ben Cooke, Charles Gallant and Austin Arsenault chipped in with single helpers.

There was no scoring in the first period, and the teams entered the final frame tied 2-2. Cameron McLennan and Caleb Creed shared the goaltendin­g win while McGuire Gallant took the loss. McLennan and Creed combined to stop 27 shots, and Gallant blocked 19 of 22 shots – the Wild’s fourth goal came into an empty net.

The Maroons were assessed seven of the game’s 13 minor penalties. Each team also picked up one double minor.

At the Tignish Credit Union Arena, Gallant posted a shutout while Cooke (2-1) and affiliated player Dylan Tuplin (2) led the offence.

Tanner Gallant (1-1) also scored while Austin Arsenault (2) and Morgan MacLeod assisted.

The Maroons built period leads of 1-0 and 3-0.

Ben Paynter was in goal for the Aces, who were outshot 3015.

Each team was called for two minor penalties, one fighting major and one game misconduct. O’Leary also received one double minor.
