Maroons collect first win of season
Three late goals in first period spark attack
The defending-champion O’Leary Maroons (1-3) got their first win of the West Prince Senior Hockey League season Friday night.
The Maroons posted a convincing 7-2 victory over the visiting Tyne Valley Tornadoes. Mike Adams, who led the Maroons with three goals and one assist, tied the game at 1-1 on a breakaway with 6:44 remaining in the first period, and he scored again with 3:11 remaining in the period to give the Maroons a 3-1 lead and they never looked back.
The Tornadoes’ Adam Ballum reduced the Maroons’ advantage to 3-2 halfway through the second period, but the Maroons responded with three more goals before the inter mis-marked
sion.
The game, which
the
league’s return to full 20-minute periods, was played before 675 fans at the O’Leary Community Sports Centre.
Also scoring for the Maroons, who received solid goaltending from Chase Dyment, were Mike MacIsaac (11), Matt Stewart (1-1), Wade Sweet and Tyson Carragher. Assists were credited to Aaron Sweet (3), Jordan MacIsaac (3), Zack Stewart (2) and Jeff MacIsaac.
Connor Dillon opened the scoring for the Tornadoes. Picking up other assists were Matt Ballum, TJ Campbell and Lucas Dyment.
The Maroons took eight of the game’s 12 minors, and they scored two short-handed goals (Wade Sweet and Mike MacIsaac). O’Leary’s Scott Bernard and Kyle Sark of the Tornadoes drew fighting majors and game misconducts for a spirited third-period tussle.
