Family Literacy Day reels in even the most reluctant reader
Families flocked to Summerside Rotary Library on Saturday to unplug from technology and reconnect with loved ones through educational games on Family Literacy Day on Saturday.
The event aimed to raise awareness on the importance of reading together as a family. Megan Moase said she is never too busy to read to her daughter Kenley Smith, aged seven.
“We read books every night and basically throughout the day. Kenley has always been a very avid reader, even just to flip through books as a baby,” said Moase.
“She enjoys books by children’s author Robert Munsch and Todd Parr.”
Moase and her daughter leafed through an eco-friendly picture book that explored the timely subject matter of environmental protection and conservation.
“It’s one of her favourites,” said Moase, with a smile. “We enjoy coming to the new library, and there are so many different activities for the kids today. It inspires them to keep on reading, which is a very important skill they will need throughout life.”
The theme for this year’s Literacy Day was “Learn at Play, Every Day!”
Multiple stations were set up in the library that included crafts; face painting, music by Les Palourdes, a puppet show, and story time in English and French.
Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999, and held annually on Jan. 27.
Activities kicked off at 10 a.m. and wrapped up at 1 p.m.
