Environmental education plays a key role in how Islanders see, and feel responsible for, our waterways, forests, land and wildlife.

Three Island environmental educators will share their experiences at the annual meeting of the Environmental Coalition of P.E.I. on Thursday, Feb. 8.

ECOPEI invites the public to its 29th annual meeting at Beaconsfield’s Carriage House in Charlottetown from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. A short business meeting starts the evening, including election of the 2018 Board of Directors.

At 7 p.m. the guest panelists will offer their ideas for encouraging and empowering Islanders of all ages. They will talk about what is working now and what could be improved going forward.

The panelists include Eric Edward, Hannah Gehrels and Jeff Dohoo. Edward has been the long-time environmental educator with the award-winning Macphail Woods Ecological Forestry Project. He has a history of teaching both young and old about all aspects of nature and conservation, and leading hands-on activities such as school-plantings.

Gehrels co-ordinates the Sierra Club’s P.E.I. Wild Child program, designed to give children an opportunity to experience, explore, and play in nature. Dohoo is a teacher at Birchwood Intermediate School and is heavily involved in teaching about nature, both in-class and through after-school activities.

There will be time after the presentations for the audience to ask questions, discuss their experiences and suggest new directions and priorities.

The evening offers an opportunity to hear about the work of ECOPEI, and about new perspectives on addressing environmental issues.

Admission is free and all are welcome. The storm date is Feb. 15. For more information, see the ECOPEI website (ecopei.ca), Facebook page, or call Daniel McRae at 902-659-2072.
