It was a golden showing for a pair of wrestlers from Summerside.

Ligrit Sadiku and Hannah Taylor, who are members of the Brock Badgers, won gold medals in their respective categories in the Ontario University Association (OUA) wrestling championships held at Brock University last weekend. Next up for Sadiku and Taylor, along with the top-three finishers in each weight division, are the U Sports national championships in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., on Feb. 23 and 24.

All-star

Sadiku, who was named to the OUA’s first all-star team, competed in the 61-kilogram category that featured eight competitors. Sadiku won all three of his pool matches against William Wang of the University of Toronto 11-0, Kais Al-Khaldi of McMaster University 10-0 and Noondin Shawanda of Algoma University 10-0. All three matches were technical fall scores.

In the gold-medal match, Sadiku had an 11-9 come-frombehind win over Elvir Uzunovic of Guelph University.

Top female wrestler

Taylor, who was also named to the OUA’s first all-star team, was selected as the most outstanding female wrestler of the tournament and was recognized as the Brock University female athlete of the week for the third time this season.

In pool play, Taylor posted three technical fall scores of 10-0 over Ryerson University’s Raquel Vengroff, Karley Kudrinko of Queens University and Madison Clayton of Lakehead University.

Taylor also had to rally in the gold-medal match as she trailed 10-4 in the final minute before posting a 15-10 win over Alexandria Town of York University. Taylor competed in the 59-kg class.
